October 11th, 7pm
with Carol Queen

“Pomo,” short for “post-modern,” describes a social philosophy that acknowledges multiple subjectivities of perspective and experience. “Pomosexual” is a way of taking this perspective and applying it to the modern notion of sexual identity. It was a scant 120 years or so ago that our currently-accepted understanding of sexual identity really began to develop – with the coining of the words we now can use to describe ourselves sexually, and from there to seek and affiliate with others like us. In the late 19th century all these terms were coined – homosexual, exhibitionist, masochist, and all the rest. Before that time these words didn’t exist, and the desires or behaviors they described were not understood in identity terms.

Pomosexuality exists where the positive possibilities of identity politics and community affiliation break down or do not adequately describe a person’s sex and gender reality. It especially seeks to question the binary way we’ve been taught in this culture to think about sexual orientation and gender identity: you are either gay, or you’re straight; if you’re not a man, you’re a woman. Plenty of people, including but not limited to bisexual and transgendered folks, have questioned this binary bias. Pomosexuality is a non-binary state of sex and gender identity, like bisexuality and transgenderism, but also including people who feel both/and as well as neither/nor, and probably also those people who complain about having to choose a sexual orientation at all! It’s a sexuality that allows, like postmodernism, for multiple identities and subjectivities.

Carol Queen, PhD, one of the editors of the anthology called PomoSexuals: Challenging Assumptions about Gender and Sexuality, will talk about sexual and gender diversity and explore its implications in our real lives. Queen is a San Francisco-based author, sex educator, and pleasure activist who co-founded and directs the Center for Sex & Culture and works as Staff Sexologist at Good Vibrations
